Collage No. 2

In hopes that these photos will help Jen (see comments)....Jen, I am such a novice but spend time each day in PSE 7.   I do each one differently, but in this collage I started out with this free texture (if I only knew where I found it!)  it's called Square 106 and it was grouped with other free textures - a square series - all of them delightful.

To this I added my picture of a fledgling woodpecker

As you can see, I had to do a lot of brushing away the background.  I wanted the brick wall of the square texture  behind him to smile through.    I think I did a color burn on him then duplicated this several times to really give him some pizazz.

Now what....next came my black eyed susan after I converted it to black and white. (I don't think this is the one I used, but I couldn't find it...oh well.) Then, finally another free texture.  This one came from Graphics Fairy.

I wish I could tell you more....except to say that I make lots of blending changes - my favorites are color burn, multiply and screen -I test different levels of  opacity at every change.   I use the  burn and dodge tools a lot - practically in every photo alteration.  I use the brush tool until it's practically worn out!  And the move tool....don't forget to use the move tool!   Placement of each item in the collage is key and the move tool helps keep you sane.

I only have two rules of thumb:  (1)  I place an assortment of pictures in my tray.  I force myself to pull  pictures that make no sense to each other.  Now I add a variety of textures - those I've made and the freebies of other folks.  Now, I use them!   It is so much fun.

and

(2)  I have no fear...I have an undo and a redo button.  I know that anything and everything can be altered.

Let me know if this nonsense helps and feel free to email me with a specific question at any time.  I'll jot down my steps on future collages to help me remember from whence I came!

  1. Marty that is stunningly gorgeous. I am in awe of your talent.

May I please, please ask how you did that? I have so been wanting to do that, and have tons of books on digital scrapbooking, but I don't think that I am going in the right direction.

    I have LR3, and PSE 7?

  2. Marty, I just saw this, and thank you so very much. I love your collage, it's been inspiring the back recesses of my mind for days. And here I was out there searching for scrapbooking programs to use...and all this time it was PSE7 which I have.

Thanks, I am going to have to give this a try.

  3. I think that the texture is from Jerry Jones? But I could be wrong, it sure looks familiar.
