Photo Collage No. 21 ~ Ragtime

My Inspiration:  Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag

SongFacts
Although Scott Joplin was not the first black American composer to receive a classical training, he was certainly the first to make a name for himself. Although he did not originate ragtime, the genré for which he became famous, his biographer Edward Berlin said "he composed music unlike any ever before written".
Joplin's most famous composition, "Maple Leaf Rag", was published while he was living in Sedalia, Missouri. It was named after the Maple Leaf Club; the date the club was founded is uncertain, but it was no later than November 24, 1898, when the first Maple Leaf ball was held. It is possible though that the actual music predates this.
"Maple Leaf Rag" was published between August 10 and September 20, 1899, the latter being the date the score was received by the Copyright Office. It made Joplin's name, his future works would be prefixed as by the composer of the "Maple Leaf Rag".
On August 10, 1900, Joplin signed a contract which gave him a one cent per copy royalty, which would be extremely profitable for both him and his estate. Though he died in 1917, "Maple Leaf Rag" was recorded no less than six times in the 1920s. There is also at least one recording extant of Joplin playing the piece himself. Dog and Butterfly

Heart

Well I stumbled upon your secret place
Safe in the trees you had tears on your face
Dog and butterfly

We're getting older the world's getting colder
For the life of me I don't know the reason why
Maybe it's livin' making us give in

Photo Collage No. 16

I haven't made a collage in quite some time - distractions - but anyway, I found this beautiful book page the other day and it continued to nag at me to come out and play.....so, play I did.  I started by making several brushes that look like little watercolor blotches and sprinkled my page with different colors.  Then, using my (seldom used, but still very much loved)  wacom tablet, drew the wire-rimmed glasses -  Collage No. 16, signed and printed:

I found a group of pictures of vintage hair styles/faces and decided to practice my brush-making skills.  Isn't she a beauty....(that's a statement, not a question)!   Collage completed with my J.&.P. Coats 6 strand  embroidery floss and Kim Klassen's brush - a Dr. Seuss classic "today you are you....."
